The EMMIR Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027 is open for international students interested in migration and intercultural relations. Applications for the 2027-2029 intake close on 20 December 2026 at 23:59 CET. If you want to understand how migration affects people, communities and public policy, this programme gives you a way to study those questions across different countries.

EMMIR combines classroom study with research and an internship. You begin in Germany and continue in Norway before following an individual study path. This guide explains what you can study, who can apply and how to prepare your application.

EMMIR Scholarship at a Glance

  • Programme: European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations.
  • Degree level: Joint Master of Arts.
  • Intake: 2027-2029, Edition 14.
  • Duration: Two years, four semesters and 120 ECTS.
  • Programme starts: 1 September 2027.
  • Application route: eMundus, coordinated by the University of Oldenburg.

Before you choose a scholarship, check whether its subject fits your plans. EMMIR is a specialist master’s in migration and intercultural relations. The award does not cover unrelated undergraduate, master’s or PhD programmes.

New to joint master’s study? Our Erasmus Mundus application guide explains how these programmes work and helps you prepare a shortlist.

Which Degree and Study Areas Does EMMIR Offer?

You work towards a joint Master of Arts in Migration and Intercultural Relations. The programme brings together several disciplines, so you can examine a migration issue through more than one approach. A question about displacement, for example, may involve law, education, history and social policy.

Subjects You Can Study

  • Migration theory, history and intercultural relations.
  • Research methods and academic writing.
  • Migration, integration, borders and citizenship.
  • Gender, work and multiculturalism.
  • Environmental change, migration policy and forced displacement.
  • Refugee protection, human rights and regional migration.

These are study themes and module options within one degree. The course list can change between intakes. Read the official EMMIR curriculum when deciding which research interests to discuss in your application.

Where Will You Study?

  • Semester 1: University of Oldenburg, Germany.
  • Semester 2: University of Stavanger, Norway.
  • Semester 3: A focus module and project-based internship through your individual mobility path.
  • Semester 4: Master’s dissertation and supervised research.

The consortium also includes the University of Nova Gorica in Slovenia, Charles University in Czechia, the University of Ghana, Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda, the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, and Mahanirban Calcutta Research Group in India.

You do not study at every partner institution. Your later destinations depend on your research focus and the agreed study plan. Compare the official mobility structure with your interests before choosing a preferred direction.

If your interests are closer to governance and public policy, compare the Erasmus Mundus MAPP Scholarship with EMMIR before deciding which programme fits your background.

What Does the EMMIR Scholarship Cover?

EMMIR offers three funding routes. Choose the option that matches your circumstances in the application form. A place on the programme does not automatically include a scholarship.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Benefits

  • Participation costs covered for selected scholarship holders.
  • EUR 1,400 per month for 24 months.
  • Health insurance.
  • University registration and student service fees.

Travel, visas, vaccinations and residence-permit costs come from the monthly stipend. There are no separate travel or installation payments. Plan for the whole mobility route, not just your first destination.

Other Admission Options

Non-fee-paying students receive participation-cost coverage but must fund their own living expenses and travel. Fee-paying students pay EUR 4,500 per semester, plus living and mobility costs. Read the official funding conditions before selecting either self-funded route.

Prepare a Practical Budget

Write down the costs you may face before your first payment, such as travel and an accommodation deposit. Then estimate monthly spending for each study location. Keep a small allowance for unexpected expenses rather than committing your entire budget in advance.

Read your funding offer carefully when it arrives. Confirm your payment arrangements and which costs you must pay yourself. If a detail is unclear, ask the programme team before making a large payment or accepting a commitment.

Who Can Apply for EMMIR?

Applicants need a relevant first degree and a clear academic interest in migration. Use the official entry requirements to assess your background before spending time on the form.

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field, such as social sciences, history, cultural studies, education, law, economics, development studies or journalism.
  • A final grade equivalent to at least C+.
  • Evidence of knowledge in migration, intercultural relations and empirical methods.
  • A completed first degree by the scholarship deadline; an accepted final transcript can document completion.

Explain your return to study when your last degree is more than five years old. Applicants who already have a master’s should justify taking another. Previous EMJM scholarship recipients cannot receive an additional EMJM award.

Can You Apply Without IELTS?

An English-language waiver may be requested using documented English-medium study or eligible professional experience. Acceptance is not automatic, and the consortium can ask for further evidence. Language test certificates are normally valid for two years. Native English speakers must demonstrate another language relevant to migration studies.

Check the language requirements before booking a test. A university letter should describe the language of instruction clearly. Keep the evidence ready rather than assuming that the name of your degree proves your language ability.

Show How Your Background Fits

Choose a course, project or work experience that connects with migration. Explain what you did and the question it raised for you. A specific example is more useful than a broad claim that you have always wanted to study abroad.

Your interests can develop during the programme. At application stage, give a clear starting point and show that you have read the curriculum. Avoid listing every research topic simply because it appears on the website.

Which Documents Should You Prepare?

  • Valid passport copy.
  • CV.
  • Statement of purpose, one to two pages.
  • Degree certificate and academic transcript.
  • Language evidence and other relevant records.
  • Official English translations where required.

Upload the requested documents as PDFs. Provide referee email addresses rather than uploading recommendation letters. The official application checklist gives the final requirements.

Use our scholarship application document checklist to organise your files, then compare each item with EMMIR’s own instructions.

Write a Focused Statement of Purpose

Start with the migration issue you want to understand. You might draw on a dissertation, community project, internship or an experience from your studies. Describe your own role and what you learned. Avoid turning the statement into a list of achievements without explaining why they matter.

Next, connect that experience to the programme. Name a relevant study area and explain how it could help you develop your question. Describe realistic, specific career plans. You do not need to promise that one degree will solve a large social problem.

Reading the draft aloud can help you spot awkward wording before uploading it. Replace vague phrases with concrete examples and remove sentences that repeat the same point. Make sure the final version sounds like you and stays within the requested length.

Check Your Files Before Submission

Use clear filenames so you can recognise each document. Open every PDF after saving it and check that all pages are readable. Make sure your name and qualification details agree across the form, passport and academic records.

Ask your referees in advance whether they are willing to be contacted. Give them a short explanation of your study plans and check their email addresses carefully. Keep copies of the files you submit in a separate folder.

How to Apply for the EMMIR Scholarship 2027

  1. Consult the official application instructions and funding options.
  2. Register through the EMMIR eMundus portal.
  3. Complete the form in English and select your funding preferences.
  4. Upload your PDFs and provide referee contact details.
  5. Review the complete application, submit it and retain the confirmation email.

Submitted applications cannot be edited. EMMIR recommends applying at least 48 hours early. Check the form while there is still time to correct a missing file or an incorrect entry.

Application Dates for the 2027-2029 Intake

  • Scholarship and non-fee-paying places: 20 December 2026, 23:59 CET.
  • Fee-paying places: no later than 15 July 2027, subject to availability.
  • Successful applicants: notifications expected from April 2027.
  • Programme begins: 1 September 2027.

Applicants seeking financial support must meet the scholarship deadline. The later fee-paying deadline does not extend the scholarship round. Confirm the time zone in the official application instructions rather than relying on your local calendar alone.

What Happens After an Offer?

Successful applicants must dispatch the required certified hard copies and provide tracking evidence within ten calendar days of notification. Prepare for this step before results arrive. Follow the offer letter closely and keep proof of dispatch.

Consider the admission and funding decisions together. Check what you have been offered before booking travel. Organise your application reference, correspondence and supporting documents so you can respond quickly to any follow-up request.

You can continue comparing options through our master’s scholarships directory while waiting for a decision. Choose alternatives that match your qualifications and research interests.

Official programme information reviewed on 18 October 2026. Selection is competitive; meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a scholarship.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is EMMIR for undergraduate or PhD study?+

No. It is a two-year joint master’s in migration and intercultural relations. Its different study themes belong to that single programme.

Will I visit every partner country?+

No. Students share the first two semesters in Germany and Norway. Later mobility follows their specialisation, internship and dissertation plans.

Does a tuition waiver include living support?+

Not necessarily. Check whether your offer is a scholarship, a non-fee-paying place or a fee-paying place. These options have different financial arrangements.

Should I send original academic documents immediately?+

Your offer letter and the official instructions explain which documents to send. Store original documents safely and prepare certified copies when requested. Do not send an unsolicited document package.

How can I make my application more relevant?+

Use a specific example from your studies or work. Explain its connection to migration and show how EMMIR’s curriculum fits the question you want to explore.

Is there a separate EMMIR PhD scholarship after graduation?+

This call does not include a PhD award. The master’s can prepare graduates for doctoral study, but any later admission and funding require their own applications.
