Lund University Scholarships in Sweden: Complete Funding Guide

PublishedEditorially verified

FundingFunding Varies
Study levelUndergraduate / Bachelor's, Master, PhD

Lund University scholarships in Sweden can help international students pay for selected bachelor's programs, master's degrees and doctoral study through different funding opportunities. Undergraduate scholarships options are available but limited, while master's applicants can explore government, university, Swedish Institute and program-specific awards. For PhD candidates, regular advertised doctoral positions usually provide paid employment. The right option depends on your degree, citizenship, academic background and the costs you need covered.

This guide separates tuition discounts from living-cost support so you can build a realistic application plan. Funding varies: a full tuition scholarship does not automatically pay for accommodation, food or travel. Review the relevant award before deciding whether you can afford the remaining costs.

Lund University Scholarships at a Glance

  • Host: Lund University, Sweden.
  • Study levels: selected bachelor's programs, master's programs and separate PhD recruitment.
  • Funding: partial or full tuition, selected living-cost awards, or doctoral employment.
  • Application route: degree admission followed by the relevant scholarship process; PhD applicants follow individual vacancies.
  • Deadlines: vary by award and intake. See the application section below.

Start with Lund's official scholarships and awards directory. If you are comparing universities, our Sweden scholarship listings offer other options to investigate.

University and Swedish Institute Funding

Lund University Global Scholarship

The LU Global Scholarship is a competitive academic-merit award for tuition-paying citizens outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. It supports master's study and, exceptionally, bachelor's programs in Development Studies, Mathematics, Physics and Physical Geography.

  • Coverage: part or all of tuition; living expenses are excluded.
  • Priority: the relevant Lund program must be your first choice at University Admissions.
  • Application: complete the degree application and pay the required application fee before applying through the separate scholarship portal.
  • Supporting statement: a scholarship motivation letter of no more than 600 words.

ARUA Scholarship

The ARUA Scholarship targets high-achieving African students who study, or previously studied, at eligible African Research Universities Alliance institutions. Applicants must meet Lund's fee-paying citizenship conditions, submit a complete degree application and choose Lund first.

  • Benefits: up to 90% of tuition, depending on the available budget.
  • Not included: living expenses and the remaining tuition balance.
  • Additional requirement: a personal scholarship motivation video, maximum one minute, linked in the application.

Consult the list of eligible institutions on the official page rather than assuming every African university participates.

SI Global Professionals and Pioneering Women in STEM

The SI Scholarship for Global Professionals supports eligible master's degree applicants from specified countries. The separate Pioneering Women in STEM scholarship targets women from eligible countries applying to approved science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs.

Both offer tuition and living-cost support; officially published benefits include a monthly allowance of SEK 12,000. Review the current nationality and eligible-program lists, along with each scheme's work-experience, leadership and document rules. Admission to Lund alone does not establish SI eligibility. These are separate applications, not automatic additions to a university tuition award.

Program-Specific Scholarships and Joint Master's Degrees

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

The Sten K. Johnson Centre's scholarship information confirms a merit-based award covering the entire tuition fee for one high-achieving non-EU applicant to the master's program in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Applications go through LU Global.

A living stipend is not confirmed for this specific award. The center also describes support for enrolled students' entrepreneurial projects. Those opportunities should not be treated as an admission scholarship or guaranteed maintenance funding.

Ingvar Kamprad Scholarship: Industrial Design

Students admitted to the master's program in Industrial Design can apply for one or both forms of the Ingvar Kamprad Scholarship, subject to eligibility:

  • Tuition award: SEK 270,000 per year for two years, for eligible non-EU/EEA students. Selection considers the portfolio, and payment goes to the university.
  • Living-cost award: SEK 128,400 per year for two years. This route is open to all admitted students and uses a personal motivation statement.

The two awards are assessed separately. Do not assume that receiving one guarantees the other.

Religious Roots of Europe

The Religious Roots of Europe Scholarship offers full tuition support, living-expense support, or both. It is for qualifying tuition-paying applicants outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, with preference for Africa, Latin America and South Asia.

Assessment considers academic ability, motivation, future plans and financial need. After applying to the program, prepare the scholarship form, a letter of intent explaining your circumstances and study goals, and two recommendation letters.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Options

Lund lists six Erasmus Mundus joint master's programs: MESPOM, IMFSE, GEM, MESD, MULTICOM and LASCALA. They cover environmental sciences, fire safety, geo-information, membrane engineering, multimodal communication, and accelerators and lasers.

Use Lund's joint master's directory to reach each official consortium. Erasmus Mundus Scholarships and admission schedules differ; a program's inclusion in this list does not confirm a funded place in every intake. Before applying, review the current consortium call and its mobility requirements.

PhD Funding and Support After Enrollment

Paid Doctoral Positions

Doctoral study at Lund has no tuition fees. Regular doctoral positions provide a salary and formal university employment. This is a separate route from LU Global.

Look under doctoral students on the official vacancies page, then follow the position's recruitment instructions. General admission normally requires 240 credits, including at least 60 at master's level, or equivalent knowledge. The department sets subject-specific requirements and may request English-test evidence.

Read the research topic closely. A strong application connects your thesis, methods and experience to the advertised project. Confirm the funding arrangement and contract terms in the vacancy; externally funded doctoral study follows a different process.

Current-Student Scholarships, Travel Grants and Hardship Support

Lund's current-student scholarships are distinct from awards used to finance initial admission. University and student-nation scholarships, foundation awards and other funds have their own eligibility conditions.

  • Travel scholarships: support qualifying study-related travel, such as degree-project work or study abroad.
  • Hardship support: the Lund University Hardship Scholarship may help with remaining tuition after extreme, unexpected financial difficulty during studies.
  • Budget planning: do not rely on a future travel grant or hardship award to cover your initial funding gap.

Keep emergency savings separate from your tuition plan. Small grants can help with a particular expense, but they should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute for a sustainable study budget.

Eligibility, English Requirements and Documents

Check Admission and Scholarship Rules Separately

A scholarship application cannot replace the academic requirements of your chosen degree. Use Lund's entry requirements and the individual program page to check your qualifications.

  • Bachelor's applicants: check upper-secondary qualifications and the program's required subjects.
  • Master's applicants: check the required bachelor's qualification and any subject-specific coursework.
  • Scholarship applicants: verify citizenship, tuition liability, program eligibility and any first-choice requirement.
  • Research applicants: match your academic record and research experience to the advertised doctoral position.

Is IELTS Required?

Lund does not offer a blanket IELTS waiver. Its English requirements allow approved tests and certain previous studies. Many programs require the equivalent of IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with no component below 5.5, but some require more.

An English-medium degree or MOI letter is not automatically sufficient. Your education and chosen program must meet the official conditions. Our MOI and IELTS alternatives guide explains why exemptions need to be checked individually.

Prepare a Route-Specific Document Folder

The official documentation guidance is the starting point. Depending on your route, prepare:

  • Academic certificates and transcripts appropriate to the degree level.
  • Identification and accepted proof of English proficiency.
  • Required translations and any country-specific verification.
  • The scholarship statement, video or references requested by your award.
  • A portfolio, CV or research material when the program or vacancy requires it.

Name files clearly and review every scan before uploading. Use specific academic examples in your statements, and explain what you contributed rather than relying on broad claims about passion or leadership.

How to Apply and Check the Latest Deadlines

Application Steps

  1. Choose a suitable degree or vacancy. Read the curriculum, entry requirements and funding conditions before preparing a statement.
  2. Plan the full cost. Separate tuition, housing, everyday expenses and travel, then identify what remains after the award.
  3. Apply for admission. For regular bachelor's and master's study, use University Admissions and follow Lund's official application steps. Joint programs and PhD vacancies may use other systems.
  4. Complete the relevant funding application. Follow the university, SI, program or consortium instructions; do not assume admission includes a scholarship application.
  5. Review the evidence. Confirm the required documents, rankings, fees and references have been submitted correctly.
  6. Track decisions and conditions. Save confirmations, monitor your email and accounts, and follow the deadlines in any offer.

Current Application Calendar

Official information checked October 27, 2026. These dates relate to the upcoming intake, while the funding routes above remain useful for future applications.

  • Autumn 2027 degree admission: the first international round runs from October 16, 2026, to January 15, 2027. Supporting documents and application-fee or exemption evidence are due February 1, 2027. See the official admissions calendar.
  • LU Global: the page still marks the previous round closed, with a February 16, 2026 deadline. Applications usually open in early February; a new exact deadline was not confirmed at this review.
  • ARUA: normally opens in early February. The official page will provide the next confirmed application window.
  • SI Global Professionals and Pioneering Women in STEM: the published scholarship application window is February 8–24, 2027; it is not yet open at this review.
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation: follows the LU Global application route.
  • Ingvar Kamprad: Lund now lists February 1, 2027 as the deadline. Use the linked official LTH application form.

Admission dates and scholarship dates are different. Recheck your chosen route before submission, especially if an older call is still displayed. An expected annual opening is not confirmation that applications are currently being accepted.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Are Lund University scholarships fully funded?+

Some routes support tuition and living costs, while others cover tuition only. Compare the specific award and your remaining budget; the overall funding label is Funding Varies.

Can bachelor's students apply for funding?+

Yes, but options are limited. The four LU Global bachelor's programs listed above are the main university route. Confirm that your chosen program is eligible before preparing a scholarship application.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?+

You may be able to submit applications to different providers. Before accepting awards, check each provider's rules on combining funding and disclose other support when requested.

Can I study at Lund without IELTS?+

Possibly, if another accepted test or your previous studies meet the official requirement. Admission and scholarship selection do not create an automatic English exemption.

Is PhD funding part of LU Global?+

No. Apply through an advertised doctoral vacancy or the relevant department's approved external-funding route. Each position has its own deadline and employment conditions.

Does a scholarship offer guarantee admission?+

Follow both processes and read every offer carefully. A funding application is not proof of admission, and you must meet all academic, documentation and award conditions.
